Answers to the questions we hear most at the Killington Welcome Center, from when to visit and how to get around to what to do on a rainy day.
Timing, getting around and finding your way to the mountain.
Any time, depending on what you like to do. Killington usually opens for skiing in early November, with more terrain in December and January and big storms in February and March. Skiing can last into June, the longest season in the East.
April and May are mud season, when hiking and biking trails close to prevent damage. Biking, hiking and climbing open around Memorial Day. Fall foliage peaks from late September to mid-October, followed by “stick season” until the ski season starts. See our seasonal guides.
Follow Killington Road, which passes many local businesses on the way to the base lodges. Snowshed has the beginner area in winter and the Adventure Center in summer. Ramshead has terrain parks and child care in winter and bike trails in summer. K-1 Base Lodge, at the top of the road, is home to the K-1 Gondola.
Killington doesn’t have a traditional village center. Businesses are spread along Killington Road, the US Route 4 corridor and Route 100. The KPAA Welcome Center at the junction of Killington Road and Route 4 is a good first stop.
There are two bus systems. The Bus (Marble Valley Regional Transit) serves all of Rutland County and stops at the Welcome Center in both directions about once an hour. Vermont Translines connects to destinations outside the county, including Burlington, Albany and Lebanon, NH. Check each service’s current schedule before you travel. More on getting here.
The K-1 Gondola carries riders to Peak Lodge near the 4,241-foot summit of Killington Peak, Vermont’s second-highest mountain. Scenic gondola rides are best on a clear day. Check Killington Resort’s conditions page for current hours and lift status.
Ideas for hiking, swimming, waterfalls and days off the slopes.
Thundering Brook Falls is a short, easy walk that is great for small children. Deer Leap is a steep, moderate hike with views of the Rutland Valley, best at sunrise or sunset. Wear sturdy shoes, and stop by the Welcome Center for trail information.
Thundering Brook Falls in Killington is the closest and easiest to reach, with a short walk to the falls. There are many more waterfalls to explore across Vermont.
In summer, the Town of Killington pool offers day rates. On rainy days or in winter, try the indoor pool at Pico Fitness Center. Echo Lake, about 30 minutes away, is a popular outdoor spot.
Visit Billings Farm & Museum in Woodstock, a working farm with hands-on activities, or the Wonderfeet Kids Museum in Rutland. Pico Fitness Center has an indoor pool and sauna.
Ride the gondola, try the Beast Mountain Coaster, browse local shops, or book a treatment at a local spa such as Spa at the Woods, Pyramid Holistic Wellness Center or the Killington Grand Spa. See more area attractions.
